The Locus of Highly Accreting AGNs on the MBH–σ Plane: Selections, Limitations, and Implications

چکیده
We re-examine the locus of narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies on theMBH–σ (black hole mass–bulge velocity dispersion) plane in the light of the results from large new optically selected samples. We find that (1) soft X-ray selected NLS1s have a lower ratio of BH mass to σ [OIII] than broad line Seyfert 1 galaxies; this remains a robust statistical result contrary to recent claims otherwise; (2) optically selected NLS1s have systematically lower Eddington luminosity ratio compared to X-ray selected NLS1s; and (3) as a result, the locus of NLS1s on the MBH–σ plane is affected by selection effects. We argue that there is no single explanation for the origin of the MBH–σ relation; instead tracks of galaxies on theMBH–σ plane differ with redshift, consistent with the downsizing of AGN activity. If these results at face value are incorrect, then the data imply that AGNs with high Eddington accretion reside preferentially in relatively late type galaxies at the present epoch, perhaps a more interesting result and a challenge to theoretical models. متن کاملRevisiting the Black Hole Masses of Soft X-ray Selected AGNs
In our previous work, using luminosity and the Hβ FWHM as surrogates for black hole mass (MBH), we compared the black hole masses of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1s) in a sample of soft X-ray selected active galactic nuclei. We found that the distributions of black hole masses in the two populations are statistically different. Recent work shows t...
متن کامل− σ ∗ relation for normal galaxies ?
In order to examine the relationship between the black hole mass MBH and stellar velocity dispersion σ∗ in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we study two effects which may cause the uncertainty of black hole mass estimates for radio-loud AGNs: the relativistic beaming effect on the observed optical continuum radiation and the orientation effect on broad emission line width. After correc...
متن کاملLow-mass Active Galactic Nuclei with Rapid X-ray Variability
We present a detailed study of the optical spectroscopic properties of 12 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with candidate low-mass black holes (BHs) selected by Kamizasa et al. through rapid X-ray variability. The highquality, echellette Magellan spectra reveal broad Hα emission in all the sources, allowing us to estimate robust viral BH masses and Eddington ratios for this unique sample. We confi...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Hole Masses in Type II Active Galactic Nuclei with Polarimetric Broad Emission Lines
Aims. Type II AGNs with polarimetric broad emission line provided strong evidence for the orientation-based unified model for AGNs. We want to investigate whether the polarimetric broad emission line in type II AGNs can be used to calculate their central supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses, like that for type I AGNs. Methods. We collected 12 type II AGNs with polarimetric broad emission line ...
